Impact of FDI in Retail – Ernst & Young India Viewpoint
The Union
Cabinet has suspended the 51% FDI in multi-brand retail and raised the cap on
FDI in single-brand retail from 51% to 100%.
- Growth of the Retail sector
in India - Improvement in Retail capability building
About 5-7 years back, the industry was expected to
grow at a much faster rate than what it actually has. Lack of retail experience
& capability has been one of the primary reasons for this subdued growth.
FDI in retail will make way for inflow of knowledge from international experts
which can give boost to the overall growth of the industry. Capability building
apart from financial investments is extremely important for the industry.
- Push to Infrastructure -
Improvement in management of supply chain
FDI in retail will boost investment in
infrastructure from the retail players, 3rd party supply chain companies as
well as the Government in the back of a sophisticated front end that
international players are likely to bring. This will improve the efficiency of
the supply chain, which will bring down the wastage, increase efficiency and
reduce the overall cost to the consumer
- Push to productivity - The
Farming Community in India
Our productivity in food & agriculture is one
of the lowest in the world and there is a significant opportunity for
up-liftment of output with investment in better farming practices. FDI in
retail will mean that the farming community will have a new support group with
a common interest which is expected to give a great push to productivity.
Likely impact if there is relaxation of FDI policy
in Retail
- Single brand
This is a welcome step. FDI investment in single
brand retailing till now has just been 0.03% [Rs 204 cr / usd 44 mn] of total
FDI investments from April 2000 to September 2011. This relaxation is likely to
result in increase in FDI in retail sector, by way of either new foreign
entrants, or buy outs / increase in stake / M&A amongst existing single
brand JVs with foreign partners. We could also potentially see present
licensing / distributor / franchise arrangements being converted to either JVs
with respective foreign retailer / brands, or, foreign retailers completely buying
out the Indian licensee / franchisee / distributor.
- Multi brand
This is a welcome and historic step. This is likely
to result in increase in investments and growth in Indian retail sector, which
is ranked amongst the top retail destinations in the world. Besides new
entrants / joint ventures, this could also result in combination of existing
cash and carry operations of foreign players with retail operations of Indian
retailers, or, foreign retailer acquiring stakes in existing Indian retail
entity. Also, this could provide further options to existing Indian retail
chains / groups to raise long term capital for expansion and maybe to attract
partnerships with some global players. Also, foreign multi brand retailers, who
did not want to enter India through cash and carry operations, may now explore
Indian presence by having stake in Indian retail company

Stop Comparing INDIA with SINGAPORE for corruption
Singapore is classified as semi-democracy;
Singapore had only a single party or coalition leading it since independence;
Singapore has long serving leaders who are often described as AUTHORITARIAN;
Singapore has shared history, shared border, shared cultural and social ties;
Singapore has significant government intervention in the economy through the Government Linked Corporations (GLCs).
However the level of corruption is under-reported in Singapore due to the tight media control and the usage of other subtler means to achieve the same aims. The kind of control that SG govt exerts on the media is unparalleled. Even the online media is relatively tame though they have been gaining strength recently. In most cases the govt critics do not have information on govt affairs as most of it is strictly controlled and distributed.
- For example the way government projects are awarded and outsourced are often shrouded in secrecy. Often these contracts are given to PAP supporters. No doubt they have the open tender system but the fact is not all projects are given out through this system or really “open”.
- Many (or even most) of the GLCs are headed PAP loyalists/cronies. The financial results of GLC are not reported. For example the head of Temasek is the PM’s wife. PAP has a system where they identify suitable candidates for the party even at the undergrad level to be groomed to be future leaders. In Singapore there is absolutely no difference between PAP and the government.

Earth's location in the universe
Earth → Solar System → Local Interstellar Cloud → Milky Way → Local Group → Virgo Supercluster → Pisces-Cetus Supercluster Complex → Observable universe → Universe
Now In detail:
Earth - 12,700 km in diameter - Our planet
Solar System - 4 light-years across - Our home planetary system. At this point, the Sun's gravity gives way to that of surrounding stars
Local Interstellar Cloud - 30 light-years across - Interstellar cloud of gas through which the Sun and a number of other stars are currently travelling
Milky Way Galaxy - 100,000 light-years across - Our home galaxy, composed of 200 billion to 400 billion stars and filled with the interstellar medium
Local Group - 3 megaparsecs across - Group of at least 47 galaxies. Dominated by Andromeda (the largest), The Milky Way and Triangulum; the remainder are small dwarf galaxies
Virgo Supercluster - 33 megaparsecs across - The supercluster of which our Local Group is a part; comprises roughly 100 galaxy groups and clusters
Pisces-Cetus Supercluster Complex - 300 megaparsecs across - The galaxy filament of which the Virgo Supercluster is a part
Observable universe - 28,000 megaparsecs across - The large-scale structure of the universe consists of more than 100 billion galaxies, arranged in millions of superclusters, galactic filaments, and voids, creating a foam-like superstructure
Universe - Minimum of 28,000 megaparsecs - Beyond the observable universe lies the unobservable regions where no light from those regions has reached the Earth yet. No information is available about the region, as light is the fastest travelling medium of information. However, since there is no reason to suppose different natural laws, the universe is likely to contain more galaxies in the same foam-like superstructure

Refined Vegetable Oil - the Dangerous Facts
Refined vegetable oil starts from the seeds of various plant sources. The fats from plant seeds are polyunsaturated, meaning they remain in a fluid state at room temperature.
There are many different kinds of commercially refined vegetable based oils, including canola or rapeseed oil, soybean oil, canola oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, and peanut oil.
The generic cooking term "vegetable oil" refers to a blend of a variety of oils often based on palm, corn, soybean or sunflower oils.
Refined cooking oils are made by highly intensive mechanical and chemical processes to extract the oil from the seeds. This process removes the natural nutrients from the seeds and creates a final product which oxidizes easily. The oxidation factor makes these oils more likely to break down into cancer causing free radicals within the body.
In addition, many refined vegetable oils are also hydrogenated. This hydrogenation process makes them solid at room temperature so they can be sold as margarine and shortening. This hydrogenation process further damages the fatty acids in the oils, creating trans fatty acids, which are particularly dangerous to human health.
The consumption of vegetable oils created through chemical extraction processes is linked to widespread inflammation within the body, elevated blood triglycerides, and an impaired insulin response. These oils have been linked to diabetes, cancer and heart disease in multiple studies.
The process of extracting vegetable oil from oil seeds is not for the squeamish. Take a look at the steps and decide for yourself if this is a "food" you want to consume:
- Oil seeds such as soybean, rapeseed, cotton, sunflower are gathered. Most of these seeds are from plants that have been genetically engineered to resist the huge amounts of pesticides applied to them.
- The seeds are husked and cleaned of dirt and dust, then crushed.
- The crushed seeds are then heated to temperatures between 110 degrees and 180 degrees in a steam bath to start the oil extraction process.
- The seeds are put through a high volume press which uses high heat and friction to press the oil from the seed pulp.
- The seed pulp and oil are then put through a hexane solvent bath and steamed again to squeeze out more oil.
Note: Hexane is produced by the refining of crude petroleum oil. It is a mild anesthetic. Inhalation of high concentrations produces first a state of mild euphoria, followed by sleepiness with headaches and nausea. Chronic intoxication from hexane has been observed in recreational solvent abusers and in workers in the shoe manufacturing, furniture restoration and automobile construction industries where hexane is used as a glue. The initial symptoms are tingling and cramps in the arms and legs, followed by general muscular weakness. In severe cases, atrophy of the skeletal muscles is observed, along with a loss of coordination and problems of vision. In 2001, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued regulations on the control of emissions of hexane gas due to its potential carcinogenic properties and environmental concerns.
- Now the seed/oil mixture is put through a centrifuge and phosphate is added to begin the separation of the oil and seed residues.
- After solvent extraction, the crude oil is separated and the solvent is evaporated and recovered. The seed pulp residues are conditioned and reprocessed to make by-products such as animal feed.
- The crude vegetable oil is then put through further refining techniques including degumming, neutralization and bleaching:
- Water degumming: In this process, water is added to the oil. After a certain reaction period the hydrated phosphatides can be separated either by decantation (settling) or continuously by means of centrifuges. In this process step a large part of water soluble and even a small proportion of the non-water soluble phophatides are removed. The extracted gums can be processed into lecithin for food, feed or for technical purposes.
- Neutralization: Any free fatty acids, phospholipids, pigments, and waxes in the extracted oil promote fat oxidation and lead to undesirable colors and oders in the final products. These impurities are removed by treating the oil with caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) or soda ash (sodium carbonate). The impurities settle to the bottom and are drawn off. The refined oils are lighter in colour, less viscous, and more susceptible to oxidation. Hmmm, lucky for us.
- Bleaching: The major purpose of bleaching is the removal of off colored materials in the oil. The heated oil is treated with various bleaching agents such as fuller's earth, activated carbon, or activated clays. Many impurities, including chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments, are absorbed by this process and removed by filtration. However, bleaching also promotes fat oxidation since some natural antioxidants and nutrients are removed along with the impurities.
- Deodorization is the final step in the refining of vegetable oils. Pressurize steam at extremely high temps (500 degrees or more) is used to remove volatile compounds which would cause off odors and tastes in the final product.
The oil produced is referred to as "refined oil" and is ready to be consumed or for the manufacture of other products. A light solution of citric acid is often added during this step to inactivate any metals such as iron or copper present in the final product.
The process of refining vegetable oil damages the fats and makes the oils very unstable and prone to going rancid quite easily. Rancid oils in any form are particularly bad for your health because they introduce cancer causing free radicals into your body, without the benefit of including an antioxidant like vitamin E.
Mary Enig and Sally Fallon of the Weston A. Price Foundation discuss this:
"High-temperature processing causes the weak carbon bonds of unsaturated fatty acids, especially triple unsaturated linolenic acid, to break apart, thereby creating dangerous free radicals. In addition, antioxidants, such as fat-soluble vitamin E, which protect the body from the ravages of free radicals, are neutralized or destroyed by high temperatures and pressures. BHT and BHA, both suspected of causing cancer and brain damage, are often added to these oils to replace vitamin E and other natural preservatives destroyed by heat."

For all Sachin Lovers
As far as statistics r concerned I got this from Sanjay Gupta for ODI’s Averages can be misleading, especially in one day cricket. What one must also look at is the rate at which the runs are scored. In my opinion the runs should be multiplied by the scoring rate and then divided by 100, to calculate an average which truly reflects the effect of the runs scored on the ultimate result of the match.
By applying the above formula in matches won, we can more accurately judge the impact of a player in the teams winning performances.
Actual Figures:
Sachin:
218 (Matches) 215 (Innings) 10429 (Runs) 56.98 (Average) 90.07 (Scoring rate)
Sehwag:
109 (Matches) 107 (Innings) 4666 (Runs) 46.19 (Average) 108.33 (Scoring rate)
Figures after taking into account Scoring Rate:
Sachin:
10429 (Runs) x 90.07 (Scoring Rate) = 939340.03 / 215 (Innings) = 4369.0234 / 100 = 43.69 (Final Average)
Sehwag:
4666 (Runs) x 108.33 (Scoring Rate) = 505467.78 / 107 (Innings) = 4723.9979 / 100 = 47.24
(Final Average)
Sachin = 43.69
Sehwag = 47.24

Spouse
A young lady visited the matchmaker for marriage, and requested
'I am looking for a spouse. Please help me to find a suitable one.
' The matchmaker said, 'your requirements, please?'
Lady replied 'Oh, good looking, polite, humorous, sporty, knowledgeable, nice talking. Willing to accompany me the whole day at home during my leisure hour, if I don't go out. Telling me interesting stories when I need companion for conversation and be silent when I want to rest.'
The matchmaker listened carefully and replied, 'I understand you need television not spouse.

Its time to learn something abt Men
I think everyone might have read abt Mom's, Wife's and Girl's...
Its time to learn something abt Men...
Who is a boy / man ?
A boy/man is one of the most beautiful creations of God.
He starts compromising at very tender age. He sacrifices his chocolates for his sister.
Later he sacrifices his love for just a smile on his parents face. He sacrifices his love for his wife and children by working late nights.
He builds their future by taking loans from banks and then repaying them for the life time. Thus he sacrifices full youth for his wife and children without any complain.
Believe me he struggles a lot but still has to hear the music (scolding) of Mother, wife and his boss. Yet every mother, wife and boss tries to have control over him.
Finally his life ends up by compromising for others happiness. He is that creation of God who no one can compete with.
Respect every boy/man in your life. You will never know what he has sacrificed for you.
Just extend your hand when he needs it and you shall receive twice fold love from him.
Enough Of Girls /women / Wife Emotional Messages Now…
Boys also Have Emotions and respect it.

What's so special about the 4th of July?
Many things have happened on the 4th of July
The 4th of July has been an important date for many centuries. Nowadays, it's associated with the United States of America and for some strange reason, they feel that everybody should celebrate that day as well. This is the same country that had a WORLD Series where only American teams took part! Being a non-American, I decided to see what else we can remember on the 4th of July.
If you're a Catholic, then you might want to commemorate the 4th July, as on this day in 371, Martin of Tours was consecrated into the church against his will. He went on to found the first ever monastery in France. He apparently performed many miracles and there are countless legends about him. The cape he gave to a poor person became the origin of the word "chaplain," referring to a military pastor.
Another one for the Catholics, the guy who was responsible for improving the quality of church music died on this day in 683. His name was Pope Saint Leo 11.
All these earlier dates are all for the Catholics. In 965, Pope BenedictV died in a prison after the emperor had him incarcerated as he fancied another Pope who would kowtow to his wishes and demands.
On this day in 1187, Saladin, leader of the United Muslim forces, completely annihilated the knights of the Third Crusade in Tiberius, Syria.
In 1546, the Pope declared war on the Lutherans.
In 1648, Antoine Daniel, a Jesuit priest who taught the Hurons many hymns in their own language, was martyred by the Iroquois. I wonder if that's where the idea for my all-time favourite movie, The Mission, came from.
On this day in 1885, Louis B. Mayer, the famous movie executive was born in Minsk, Russia. I'm sure most people have heard of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). Some of his successes were Ben hur and Grand Hotel. Apparently, he was a bit of a bastard but he had the ability to make a star.
380 People died of a blistering heat wave in the north eastern USA in 1911.
1918 and on this day Pauline Esther Friedman and her twin sister were born. Both became famous columnists in their day, but Pauline was definitely the more famous of the two. Her pen name was Ann Landers, but she was best known for her advice column called Dear Abby.
In 1927, the famous playwright, Neil Simon was born in The Bronx in New York. The Odd Couple and The Goodbye Girl were two of my favourites from him.
Especially for Cris A, in 1946 the Philippines became a self-governing nation after 48 years of US rule.
1954 And the 14 years of ration books and rationing meat and bacon for the duration of the second world war and for some years after, ended on this day in Great Britain.
In 1968, a brave Alec Rose received a hero's welcome in Portsmouth, as he completed a 354 day solo round the world yacht trip without any corporate sponsorship. He was knighted for his effort on the next day -5th July. The Queen didn't waste much time!
In 1976, on the 4th July, Israeli commandos secretly flew thousands of kilometres to Uganda and heroically raided its airport at Entebbe, rescuing the almost 200 Israeli and Jewish passengers of Air France's infamous flight hijacked by Palestinian and German terrorists. Unfortunately the only Israeli Defence Force casualty, was the operation's commander who was shot and killed at they entered the airport's terminal.
This sounds unbelievable but it's true. In 1985 on this day, Ruth Lawrence became the youngest Brit at only age 13, to earn a first-class degree and the youngest known graduate of Oxford University. Now my youngest should be that smart. I can retire!
In 2003 we were shocked to hear that Barry White, famous singer who sang amongst others, You're the first, the last, my everything, died.
And finally we better not forget, it's also American Independence Day.
Note: Any more special ones please comment will add to this

2 Minutes noodles
BE AWARE.....!!!
Many of us can't do without “Maggi" especially when one is away from home, in a foreign land. Here is a piece of information to share so that we can remove the potential health hazard of consuming Maggi.
DO NOT IGNORE THIS ... Especially those who are fond of Maggi...
‘CORRECT WAYOF COOKING NOODLES'
The correct way to cook instant noodles without harming our bodies and health:
Normally, how we cook the instant noodles is to put the noodles into a pot with water, throw in the powder and let it cook for around 3 minutes and then it's ready to eat.
This is the WRONG method of cooking the instant noodles.
By doing this, when we actually boil the ingredients in the powder, normally with MSG (monosodium Glutamate / aginomoto), it will change the molecular structure of the MSG, causing it to be toxic.
The other thing that you may or may not realize is that, the noodles are coated with wax and it will take around 4 to 5 days for the body to excrete the wax after you have eaten the noodles.
CORRECT METHOD:
1. Boil the noodles in a pot of water.
2. Once the noodles are cooked, take out the noodles, and throw away the water which contains wax.
3. Boil another pot of water, add the cooked noodles into the hot boiling water and then turn off the stove.
4. Only at this stage when the stove is off, and while the water is very hot, add the flavouring powder into the water, to make noodle soup.
5. However, if you need dry noodles, remove the noodles and add the flavoring powder and toss it to get dry noodles.
Dietician's Note:
If you buy plain noodles, you initially need to boil in water and discard the water. This will soften the noodles, but to prevent it from sticking we need to add a tbsp of oil. The noodles are deep fried partially to make them crunchy and then dusted with flour to prevent them from sticking while boiling. Hence when you buy the noodles they are already made unhealthy and this is the type Maggie too is made, plus they add MSG / Ajinomoto and other chemical preservatives.
Did the poor lady realise the hazard involved? Apparently not!
Of course these insecticides are inflammable - BEWARE OF THE SAME ! Don't use them while the burner is on in the kitchen.

A large number of patients with ages ranging from 18-24 years are ending up with pancreatitis either as a swelling or infection of the pancreas due to regular consumption of instant noodles... If the frequency is more than 3 times a week, then it is very hazardous...

Safety in Kitchen:
I'm writing about a shocking episode that happened on 13th May 2011 in Pune. This may be a good, useful lesson in safety for all of us to remember.
I was talking to someone I know, a person who is normally quite lively and chirpy but who sounded rather down and depressed this morning. This is the story that I heard, the reason behind the depression... A family firend had died due to burns sustained in the kitchen.
The gas stove was on, cooking under process. The lady observed some cockroaches near the sink and grabbed a can of insect repellent and sprayed it..Near the gas stove, which was on/burning. There was an explosion and in no time the poor woman was covered in flames, sustained 65% burns. Her husband rushed in, tried to douse the flames and his clothes too caught fire. The husband is still in hospital, in the burns ward, still unaware that his wife has succumbed, dead on arrival.
I've been trying to gather some information on the inscet repellents such as "Hit", "Mortein" etc. Are they inflammable? I guess they are, and the nano-particles spread extremely rapidly.
